Thousands of festive revellers filed into the Flag Market for hours of entertainment in what has been billed as one of the best ever events.
Despite a trickle of rain, midway through the event, it didn’t put off the crowd as they stuck through to the end with the cast of the show officially launching Christmas in the city.
The event was supported by leading independent broadband provider, Brsk, high end supermarket, Booths, the brilliant SpudBros, award winning parkour, stunt and free running academy, The Street Monkeys, Bloor Homes and Preston City Council, and delivered by the Business Improvement District team, with support from the city businesses, and Smooth Radio.
Kicking over two hours of non-stop entertainment was the city’s own Warren Michaels who stirred the early arrivals with some vintage classics, before Smooth Radio presenter Darren Parks and Danny Bee welcomed the huddled masses.
And then the party really got started as Preston’s own DLN Dance and Kid’s Party Live took to the stage with a mix of high-energy moves and chart-smashing hits before handing over the mic to TikTok sensation Henry Oliver who dazzled the crowd with his rendition of famous tunes and a few festive hits too.
Next up, BBC introducing star Peggy – and proud Prestonian – rapped his way into the crowd’s heart before superstar ventriloquist Paul Zerdin and pal Sam left the crowd in raptures with some dad jokes, one-liners and “magic” – something for all ages.
Keeping the crowd warm, the brilliant Trilogies stormed through some classics before Switch On Star, founder Debbie Meade-McLoughlin from Jade’s Bags was welcomed to the stage for her incredible charity work, carrying on the legacy of her late daughter, Jade.
And then it all went off with The Runaway Club bringing the house down with their electric-pop-infused rock before Preston legends SpudBros introduced the Dementia Choir with a song and video ensuring there was not a dry eye on the Flag Market.
With thousands of people packed in front of the Harris Building, comedian Jon Culshaw was joined on stage by Santa and the rest of the stars of the show counting down to launch Lancashire’s Capital of Christmas – with lots of lights, sparkles, flames and ‘snow’!
Organisers say footfall in the city centre was increased on Saturday, with number up 7% year on year 4% week on week, coinciding with a boost for business ahead of a busy few weeks in the city.
Helen Clarke, marketing manager at Booths, said: “What an incredible night! From start to finish it was brilliant to see so many people enjoying the event, certainly one of the best ones we have seen in Preston.”
Jamie Griffiths, content director from Smooth Radio, said: “We always love the Switch On event and tonight was no different, the mix of entertainment was incredible, and the atmosphere was amazing. Well done, Preston!”
Mark Whittle, from Preston BID, said: “As always, Preston and the city centre businesses delivered. The crowd at the Flag Market was one of the biggest we have seen in years and the entertainment on stage was brilliant.
“A huge thanks to everyone who came down to enjoy the event, our performers, sponsors and of course, city centre businesses, who make sure events like this are possible.
“By shopping locally this festive season, we strengthen the heart of our community. Local spending has real power; choosing local businesses this Christmas helps families, fuels our local economy, and keeps our high streets vibrant for everyone.”
